Proper Fan Speed Setting During Heating Mode
It might make sense to have your fan speed at maximum all the time. However, in heating mode this isn’t always the case. During the winter months it is best to allow your heat pump to run at a lower fan setting and spread heat out more evenly over a longer period of time.
The reason for this is two fold:
- Maintaining temperature over a longer period of time is more efficient than getting a room to temperature quickly
- A lower fan speed ensures your heat pump will run for longer periods of time which is required for the system to go into what’s called a defrost mode (watch this video on defrost)
Running the fan too high can mean your heat pump will not run long enough in order to kick into a defrost cycle. Most brands required a 15 minute operation for a defrost cycle to kick in.
If defrost cycles do not occur then there is an increase risk of your outdoor unit freezing up out doors.
